Question PL and Autofocus

Hello,

I used HOYA 58mm PL filter on Canon 18-55mm (58mm-diameter) lens.
Camera is Canon 500D. I had read on several forums and elsewhere that
auto-focus does not "work" with PL for DSLR cameras.

However mine works well with above config. So is what I had read earlier wrong?

Thanks.

there are two types of polarizing filters, linear and circular.
For most AF cameras you need to use a circular polarizer so it doesn't mess with the AF.

you can read more about it here:

Yes I am aware of this, and also aware of differences between PL and CPL. However, I am wondering how my autofocus is working very well with my PL (linear) filter.

Thanks,
Jatin

i do not know. I would speculate that the contrast detection mechinism is able to work better than some comparable cameras. Besides potential AF issues, using a LP in place of a CP can casue exposure errors. If you're not having any of that either - then lucky you, you don't have to spend 2x the $$ on a CP.

I have just purchased a circular polariser for my 18-55mm lens also.
Am I correct it thinking that you would have to focus on the subject you want to capture first and then turn the polariser so its in the correct position?
sorry if this sounds like a silly/stupid/dumb question.

yes, generally focus first, then adjust the outside ring of the polarizer..

Also depends on how the filter is rotated. You might find performance enhanced or hindered depending on how the filter is turned.
