I have a Nikon D3000, I'm a novice and and I want to buy a external flash. What model (not too complicated and not too expensive) can you suggest me for this model....?

Hi and welcome!
An SB600 would be a good choice. They are recently discontinued I believe but I see that Adorama has some factory refurbished units for sale. you can move up to the SB700 if you want new. There are also some aftermarket manufacturers that offer decent speedlights. For me I'd want 2 features: ittl, meaning the camera and flash communicate (more automation) and second a head that can tilt and swivel so you can bounce the light. And buy as much power as you can afford really helpful when you have to bounce light off walls and ceilings...

This list might be a good starting point.

Two questions: how much can you spend? And are you planning on using the flash on- or off- camera or both?

The SB-600 is a great recommendation and I agree that iTTL and power and tilt/swivel are the main features to look for with on-camera use. But if you are thinking of going Strobist and shooting off-camera with radio triggers and you're on a budget, chances are good you won't have iTTL, and tilt-and-swivel aren't going to be your main concerns. Different usage can determine quite a different speedlight for your needs.

I just picked up a Nissin Di866 Mark II about 2 months ago and love it. They're in the $300 range.

Heres a post I wrote that describes some of the basic terminology that's used to describe flash features. Hope it helps.
