those definitely look interesting for the $. I'm looking for something to start out at my home for portraits too but just haven't found anything reasonable. Reading their site a little, they seem descent for the cost. Hopefully someone with good lighting knowledge pops in on this.

Yes and no....

150 w/s strobes are OK for a small studio set-up. These are really no name studio lights and the price seems a little steep to me for what they are. Just to give you a comparison. Here is a no name ebay kit for the same price that 4 lights at double the power and additonal accessories.

The same store has ones starting at $300 which are more than the futureshop add. Ebay is full of other examples

Obviously, any no name kit carrys some risk that you will not face with a top brand name, but you are paying double that price for a single head. I personally would look elsewhere as that is a bit too much money for what is being offered.

You're budget seems to be high enough that there's no reason to settle for something inferior. You're better off getting a lil bit of somethin quality for the same amount of money , than getting a whole bunch of something junk. Check these guys out AlienBees: Illuminating the Galaxy with Professional Photographic Lighting Equipment They ship to Canada. I know from personal experience that they stand behind their product, You can upgrade for the price difference of what you're upgrading from and to. And they are quality products. Another option is speedlights. For the $500 you're willing to spend on that set you coud get an AB, a speedlight(of quality brands), and stands and modifers(of cheap brands). You'd have everything you need for a small studio and not hafta worry about it being junk or not fulfilling your needs.

Einsteins are nice... the alien bee line is what you're after...an AB400 or an AB800...
