Default Which to get

I have a Nikon D3000, currently I have 55-200mm and 18-55mm lens for it. A family member has offered to get me a new lens for my birthday and I have been researching and am not sure which would be best for me. Photography is mainly a hobby at the current moment. I take a lot of portriats of my daughter and other family member's children. I have been debating on the 50mm and the 35 mm . Any suggestions??

Do they have big pockets? The 50mm AF-S is fairly pricey (around $550), and the AF model will not autofocus on your body. The 35mm AF-s is around $250 and will work great on your camera. With the crop sensor, I would recommend the 35mm, because for indoor shooting the 50mm is a bit long unless you are shooting in big rooms

Both good lenses..the 50mm, f/1.4 will cost about twice as much as the 35, however. If you tend to work in tight spaces, and/or shoot larger groups of people, the 35 might be a better choice, but it also comes with a little more distortion issues than the 50. We currently own both of these lenses and they both serve our needs very well.
