I've currently got a panasonic dmc-lx3 which I carry everywhere with me. Its in a random camera bag, which I keep inside my backpack which I take everywhere with me,yes to work and everywhere else.
Now I'm getting myself a canon 500D with 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses and I would like to carry it (with the 18-55mm lens) with me like I do with my current camera. I'm intending to get a proper camera bag to hold the camera and both lenses for when I go out with the express purpose of shooting. But for just carrying it around in my backpack I'd like something smaller. Would a neoprene bag (neoprene on ebay) offer enough protection for that or do I need the canon semi-hardcase?

I've always been okay with a Zing and putting my camera in a regular backpack, but I'm pretty careful with my stuff. I think this is going to be a matter of personal tolerance to risk.

Thanks Inkista, that's what I needed to know. If having a neoprene case requires being very careful then I'm probably better off with a semi hard case as I sometimes absentmindedly put stuff into the same pounch as my camera.

I've got 2 Lowepro bags, they're very nice, one for ALL my kit, one for just the camera, 1 extra lens and a selection of filters. I don't every worry about what I do with the camera in these bags..
You've got an expensive camera, and Neophren gives as much cushioning to your knee in a wetsuit as it does to your camera, and I've had enough bumps and bruises while diving to know that isn't much.. Your small camera is light, so doesn't have the same momentum when dropped.. I would seriously consider a proper camera bag designed for purpose.. My personal like is for Lowepro, but there are cheaper manufacturers around, I'd suggest you go into a camera shop, see what you like, then get a 2nd hand on on fleabay if they're too expensive..
