Default 50+ people photo

I have a job to go and take an indoor group photo of 55 people. I will be higher than the group to take the shot. 8x10 size prints will be ordered. I use a Nikon D700 camera. I do not know what size lense I should use for this type of photo. I dont mind buying a lense, but I would like one that I can use for portraits too. Please send me your suggestions. Im really nervous and want this to come out great!!

Hi and welcome!
Humm, more things to consider...will you be using any lighting equipment? If not you will need a fast lens. You probably will need to go wide angle to get everybody in and a WA is not really a good portrait lens. Of course you can go with a fast zoom, that would give you the WA and still zoom to a decent portrait length. Nikon 24-70f2.8 would be a nice choice @$1750US or the full frame tamron 28-75f2.8 @$500US.

How far between you and the group?

What's the space like?

55 people in 5 rows of 11 isn't all that hard.
