Default Quantaray flash on Nikon D60 problem

I have a Nikon D60 and I just got a Quantaray QDC 900WA flash. I was told this flash would work with the i-TTL metering system of the camera. That doesn't seem to be the case tho. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's the flash. The problem I have is when I have the flash in the i-TTL mode I get severely under exposed shots, sometimes to the point they don't even show up, in low light indoor situations. I tried switching the flash to manual mode and I get better results but there are still times that the photo shows up almost completely black even tho the flash did fire. It seems like the flash doesn't sync with the shutter. I have tried diferent shutter speeds ranging from 1/200 a sec and longer but havn't had any better results. I just started trying my hand at photography and don't know much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Hate to say it, but that's what you get with off-brand gear sometimes.

It's still usable for what I need it for 90% of the time. I'm not a proff. and never will be. I just thought maybe I was doing something wrong. I spend way too much money on my primary hobby as it is...not about to spend 400-500 bucks on a flash when I'm not sure if I'm gonna stay interested in phtography. I understand what your saying tho...I don't skimp on anything with my primary hobby. If I get more into photography I 'll drop the money for a Nikon flash...till then...I"ll live with this one.

Are you aware of the general flash requirements? Such as sync speed and such. If not you might want to hit the books. Flash can be a daunting subject what with GN and all that. But it need not be a killer. From what it sounds like you may have your shutter speed set wrong in camera or it isn't talking to the flash properly. I have seen quite a few posts on the web about underexposure with this flash unit. It may help to set +1.7 or higher EV compensation. Good luck.
