Default Sigma 120-400 f/4.5-5.6

Has anyone tried this lens? One showed up on Craigslist for a good price, and I'm wondering if it's worth looking at. I can't touch a Canon 100-400 L, by the way, so this is a case of picking up the Sigma or sticking with my 55-250 for a while longer. The next best alternative for me would probably be Canon's 70-300 USM, but even that runs close to twice what this lens is listed for.

Any thoughts?

According to THIS TEST The sigma actually beats the Canon L in sharpness....
No experience with it myself though.

Some shots with my Sigma 120-400mm OS. All were handheld and were PP with iMac, CS5, and Topaz. All were at 400mm.

Wow - not too shabby. I'll see if I can go take a look at the lens. Thanks to both of you!

You are welcome.

I forgot to add that the body is a Canon 50D.

Just for reference, I have the same lens on a Nikon mount and it is fantastic. I use it to shoot soccer and it focuses fast, tracks well, and is very sharp. I don't have a Nikon comparison, so I couldn't tell you if it's better or worse than a comparible Nikon lens.

Great. All I have to do now is get the guy on CL to respond to an email!

Thanks for the info. It sounds like this lens is a pretty decent buy for the price.
