Default Wider lens on a budget for a Canon 40D?

Hello

I bought my DSLR last year and at the moment only have a 50mm f/1.8, but need something wider, ideally somewhere between 10mm and 20mm. If I had a full-frame camera, I'd get something like the 28mm f/2.8, but that isn't wide enough on the 40D, and as far as I know there isn't a prime that would give me similar photos on my camera for a similar price. I would love to get something like the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 but simply can't afford it.

I've looked at a few lenses, for example the 18-55mm kit lens, but haven't heard great things from my friends who have one, are they right to say it isn't a very good lens? What would you guys recommend? In the case of a lens like the 18-55mm, it's only really the 18mm end I'm worried about, as I have the 50mm well covered with my current lens

Thanks!

Sorry, my fault for not including a budget! That's a bit much for me, would be ideal if I could afford it though if possible I'd like to keep it around £200 or less (about $320) but will stretch to a bit more if it's really worth it.
Thanks!

Bit above that, ($380, here. I googled up a UK price of £259.00, but no idea who the seller is).

Rokinon/Samyang/Vivitar/Bower/Phoenix/etc. etc. 14mm f/2.8. It's a rectilinear, and not a fisheye, but it's a manual focus/aperture lens, and does have some weird mustache distortion that you'll have to correct for in post. Bonus, though, is that it's designed for full-frame.

Thanks! That looks like a very good solution - shame about the lack of AF but hopefully I'll get used to it, though I sometimes find it quite difficult on wide lenses. My only worry would be not being able to put a filter on it - maybe I'm just being paranoid but all my lenses have a filter on the front to protect them, are you aware of any solutions to this or should I not worry too much anyway?

Nope, and that's probably the main reason I haven't gotten one for my 5D. Not so much for protection (I shoot with a bare nekkid fisheye with one of those bulgy front elements), but because if you're shooting landscapes with an ultrawide, you occasionally want a CP, GND, or IR filter on the lens.

I really hate to say it, but probably saving up for prorper superwide (Tokina 11-16, 12-24, Sigma 10-20, or EF-S 10-22) might really be the best solution.

I am somewhat in a similar boat. I have a 5D MkII with the 24-70 on it, and love the combo, but I would like to get a 14mm for landscapes in Yellowstone. I'd like a great wide prime to take the sharpest possible shots, but the Canon 14mm L is way out of my budget right now. Just bought the 70-200 2.8L IS II not long ago.

I saw there is a cheaper Bower lens, but it says optimized for APS-C sensors. My main use for it would be landscapes, so a CP may be essential.

Yeah you're probably right there, might see if I can try one of these out somehow and see what happens anyway, thanks for the help
