I don't use a tripod or monopod much but I just got a Canon 60D, and I have a Sigma 70- 200 F2.8 lens. When using the tripod is it better to attach it to the lens rather than the camera?

If you have a lens with a tripod collar, then use it. The reason is that the tripod collar helps support the lens/camera combination at its center of balance. If you connect the camera, then that's a lot of torque from the weight of the lens pulling on the tripod head on one side. It's harder for the tripod to keep the lens/camera stable that way.

If the lens has a tripod collar then use it.
(1) It balances the whole camera/lens combination. (2) It may mean less strain on the lens mount.
