I recently bought a new Nikon D7000...absolutely love the camera. Now I am looking at getting a 400mm lens. My question is....does anyone have experiment with either a Sigma or Tameron Lens with the D7000? Which would you recommend? I would HAVE to have a DX mount with AF-S and VR.
Thank you in advance.

Whoa there. First, there's no such thing as a DX mount: The Nikon F-Mount is unchanged whether it's on a DX or FX body. Only the sensor changes. Second, with the D7000, you DONT need AF-S. VR is also unnecessary if you're going to be on a tripod, which is a very good possibility.
What do you need the lens for? What are you subjects?

Are we talking prime or zoom? A 400 prime is pretty specialized, and hugely expensive, especially with AF-S and VR. Are you birding? I would try getting closer before shelling out for a 400.

What lenses do you have now? As already said a 400mm prime is an expensive lens. You might find that you could get by with a nice Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 and a Nikon TC-20E II (or III). While it won't be as fast as a fast prime you would be amazed at how well that combo works, plus it will give you AF-S and VR.

Sorry.....I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote a DX mount.
![]() I do a lot of wildlife, mainly Hummingbirds. I do have a 70-300mm, and a variety of smaller lenses. I was told by someone else that I should get either the 400mm or extension tubes. But what I have read about extension tubes is that the clarity is not very good. I know the 400mm is a pricey unit, but I do believe in getting myself a present every now and again.... Being that my vision is not the greatest I do need AF-S. Thank you again for all the help.

What does a vision problem have to do with AF-S? AF-S just means there is a focus motor in the lens, but if you camera has a focus motor in the body there is no need for a motor in the Lens.
