I have a 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and I'm looking for some lens variety on a smaller budget. I'm thinking of the 50mm f/1.4 USM and I just wanted the opinions of some other photographers before I make this purchase. The focal range and the subtle effect of the 50mm are the main differences between my 18-200mm. For about $380, it's affordable and all I'm looking to spend at this time. For someone with a very limited variety of lenses, is this worth the investment -- or should I hold out and buy a lens with a more dramatic effect that would contrast my 18-200mm, such as the 15mm fisheye?
Please let me know what you think! |

First off, which camera are you using (mainly FF or crop), and what do you plan to shoot? That is going to make a big difference in the answers you get. The 50 f/1.4 would be a great portrait lens, especially on a crop body.
Secondly, fisheye is extremely loved or hated. While it is entirely subjective and depends on the subject or type of photography, I do know that the Photo Editors of Outside Magazine cannot stand fisheye and advise against it. Again though, that is subjective. |

If ur certain that u ll be using the 50mm for a fair bit of ur photographs(I assume ur gonna use it for portraits) then go for it its worth the money. If not you can always give a shot at the F/1.8 which is jus 100$ and there are instances where the 1.8 performs better than 1.4 and it is certainly worth the 100 bucks..
