What is with green, BTW? You could always use white and then PS process in whatever colour you want later.

Why green? Chances of a model/subject showing up for a shoot wearing white... about 50/50. chances of a model/subject showing up wearing bright chroma green... about 0%! For photoshop, you are correct.. you don't need to use green, just something different from what the model is wearing. Video though, most video programs are set up to isolate from chroma green.
Here is an example of using seamless background paper...

Ya... me trying to dye 12-15 feet of fabric so the color is 100% even throughout probably would be a bit of a stretch. :S
As for the green color. Commonly chroma key work is Bright Green or Bright Blue because of the reasons Papa Rotzzi gave. When keying out video you have to be able to use an automated process as you can't mask you each frame as you would in photoshop. Thus for example white would make things extremely difficult as any bright highlights or white on your subject would be keyed out (such as their eyes). Any bright color technically works. Bright green is generally the most popular because it is the least likely to exist within an image and doesn't share any tonal range with common human features. For example red isn't used because our skin can have red tons in it as well as our hair. The only exception in terms of green is green eyes, however, natural green eyes are never the same obnoxious green that the backgrounds would be. As for an update. A friend had a 5 foot by 9 foot blanket that was green that I borrowed. The green color wasn't rich enough but it gave me something to experiment with. I definitely need something much wider than 5 feet. I am thinking 9 feet wide would be ideal for my space. 12 feet would be nice but it would be quite a challenge to make it work in my less than gigantic studio area. thanks for all the help so far guys!
