I just picked up a "new to me" lens today (Nikon 80-200mm 2.8) and have taken a few shots.
The lens is in mint condition (externally at least. I'm assuming internally too). I notice some pics are turning out looking a bit "off"...color wise. I'm wondering if this is operator error (me) or lens problem. The lens does have a UV filter on it. These pics were taken indoor under fluorescent lighting. ![]() Exposure: 1/500s Aperture: 2.8 ISO: 3200 White Bal: Auto ![]() Exposure: 1/500s Aperture: 2.8 ISO: 3200 White Bal: Auto These pics were taken one after the other. Notice on the first pic there's a yellow tint at the top 3/4 of the pic. On the second pic, the yellow tint is at the bottom half of the pic. I have taken pics of white objects too. First pic comes out with some yellow tint, then next exposure of same subject under same conditions comes out white with no yellow tint. Can someone help me figure out what is going on or what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

FLuorescent lighting changes colour very very rapidly. At 1/500s, your camera is recording that shift. This is normal and should be visible with any lens on any camera.

They say you learn something new each day. The 'flourescent effect' is a bit of info I've completely missed in the last 18months of reading this site.
Thanks for bringing this subject up jr211.

flourescent. ![]() you need a really slow shuterspeed.. about 1/50th or slower to catch the full cycle. EDIT: congrats on the new lens... the 80-200 is nice. did you get the AF-S or AF-D version?

I got the AF-D version. I bought it used but still spent more than I originally planned. No new toys for awhile.

While the fluorescent issue is correct, I`d like to answer your topic question
Lenses do occasionally need adjusting / recalibrating. Most lenses will benefit slightly from a calibration to tighter tolerances than the manufacturing process - unfortunately this is something we cannot do ourselves, though some cameras have the ability to make slight adjustments for the purpose of autofocus. If a lens is dropped or damaged internally - some of the interior elements may change position or become unstable or an internal hellicoid could become damaged. In this case you`ll likely notice part of your images always being out of focus, or the focusing or zooming mechanism could become not smooth. These kinds of damage will require a trip to a repair center. Your case above however - is definitely the lighting issue the other comments have illuminated for you

Thank you so much for asking this, I was actually shooting in a fluorescent room and was having problems with the fast shutter speed, as well, recently. Nice to hear that it's a super easy problem to fix!
