Default Using old lens with newer camera (Nikon)

I have a Nikon D3000 and of course the default lens is a G. I am looking at a friend's wide-zoom to possibly buy and can't figure out how to use its auto-focus. Is it that it's not compatible with the newer camera?

The wide-zoom is a Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 D

Thanks in advance for any help.

AF means that the lens doesn't have an autofocus motor in it. To have autofocus, your camera body has to have an AF motor. That means a D90 or higher body. With your D3000, only AF-S lenses will autofocus.

You can still use the lens with manual focus, though.

They are compatible. You just lose auto focus. The metering and everything else works fine. Just be sure you lock the aperture ring on the lens to the higest value (f/22), and manual focus.

You can use it in manual focus.
