Default Canon Flash on a Nikon body?

I just spotted a Canon 430EX on craigslist for a great price. I have a Nikon D5000. Anyone know if I can use the Canon Flash on the Nikon body? Thanks!

I don't know about that particular flash, but the communication protocols are completely different, and it is usually discouraged to even try for risk of damaging one of the other.

You can use it but since only the center contact will line up, you will not be able to transmit ttl data, thus you can only use it in manual mode.

I have an SB 600 so maybe I could just use it as a slave?

Optical slave? Sure, in manual mode

430EX has no built-in optical slave, no PC port, and doesn't work well with most optical slaves, and won't talk CLS. Don't think I'd go there if I were a Nikon shooter. It's not like adding an SB-26 to a Canon setup.

If you mean slave with cheap radio triggers, a fully manual flash (like an LP160 or YN-560) is probably going to give you more synch options, more power, and a lower price tag.

And a Nissin Di866 or Di 622-II will be CLS and i-TTL compatible.

Wouldnt wanna use a Canon flash on a Nikon body: While the other contacts may not line up properly, then can cause shorts in either the flash and/or the body.
