Default Slide Converters

I have thousands of slides I need to digitize, so I'm looking for a reasonbly-priced good-quality converter. I've tried the one from VuPoint and -- aside from the fact that the display doesn't show the slides -- the quality of the scan is horrible with over-saturated colors and over-exposed highlights. The slide attachment on my flatbed scanned is way to slow and cumbersome at 30 to 40 seconds per slide. So... I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations.

Ive only ever tried 3 systems.

Epson V500 Flatbed: its designed for negatives, but it takes a while to scan each one. not ideal, given that you want shorter than 30-50 seconds.

Lab process: Send the slides to a lab to have them scanned. This can be expensive, and you run the risk of the lab damaging/losing your slides.

Nikon Coolscan systems: Faster than the flatbed scanner with excellent results, but just as expensive as a lab processing.
