Default Indoor Photography Gear

I'm just an amateur photographer and I generally prefer to do outdoors portrait photos however, I've been wanting to do more indoors photography but my kit lens only goes so far as f/3.5 (I shoot a Nikon D80 using an 18-135mm kit lens).

I've been thinking of getting either a faster lens, specifically the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or a flash, like the Nikon SB-600 (I know that there are 3rd party flashes available but I get a little confused with the different versions and I want to be sure that if I do get a flash, it'll be compatible with my Nikon).

I'd like to get both eventually, but for now I can really only afford one or the other.
Would a flash be of more help working indoors with my current lens or would I be better off getting a faster lens?

Thanks!

A flash with bounce like the sb600 would probably be the better, more versatile choice.

I'd get a fixed 50mm 1.8 lens. They're not very expensive and they're great for indoor photography.

For a flash, the Nikon SB-700 is an awesome unit. Works great as a direct, on-camera flash or as an off-camera remote flash.
