I am very new to photography. I recently purchased at D70 to start my learning. It came with a 28-200mm tamron lens. Just today I was given a Nikon 50mm 1.8 e-series lens. Its totally manual, which I have already begun to figure out. My question is this....why does my flash not fire? Not only will it not fire, the camera won't snap a picture if the flash is popped up. I know this is a very old lens, but the photos I've taken are great looking..sharp...good color. Does the flash not fire becuase the lens is an older style? Is there anyway around this?

The default setting for the pop-up flash is TTL (through the lens), which requires the camera to be able to meter the scene properly. As you've already discovered, the camera can't meter with older lenses so it can't use the pop-up flash in TTL mode. There is still a way to use the pop-up flash, though. If you dig around in the menus a little bit, you should be able to find a setting for the pop-up flash where you can switch it from TTL to manual. In manual mode, you will pick one setting for the flash power (1/2, 1/4, etc.) and it will always fire at that power when the flash is up. You basically have to try different levels of flash power until you get a properly exposed image. Not a very intelligent system, but it will work in a pinch.
