BTW, I've never claimed to be perfect...far from it...

Its seems hard to know what to invest into photography stuff when beginning or just even adding onto what you have. I just purchased the new Cannon EOS 7D and am soo excited to have it arrive in the mail nxt week along with 2 new lens and few other things.

Meantime i did purchase the NEW Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and as well the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom3 student and teacher edition. So, will see what I can do with this stuff. I did have the Adobe Elements 8 but wanted to upgrade.

I always think anything is a good investment if ya try it and then if ya dont like it there are many places it seems that one can re-sell things on from craigslist, ebay, and the list goes on and on.

Good luck in your decisions!

Here's one more thing to think about.... you can always go back and re-process shots if you buy PS later -- especially if you shoot RAW and save the RAW files -- but you may not be able to go back and re-shoot with a better lens. I'd be inclined to look at something like Gimp, or Paint.net and pop for a lens instead. Even Photoshop Express would save you some real money in the short run.
