Default [HELP] MC-36 clone remote for Nikon D80

so I have purchased this remote off ebay. its an exact clone of the MC=36 for a fraction of the price with a connector for the D70 and D80. instructions say to put into bulb mode to use the remote.

well when in bulb mode I can use the timer and it opens the shutter but doesn't close it. I can press the shutter button on the remote yet it doesn't close it. The only way to close the shutter is to unplug the remote.

If I leave the camera to a set shutter speed the timer then works as a timer and using the shutter button.

maybe there is a setting I am forgetting, but I was trying to take photos of lightening and it was dark and cold and I didn't have time to mess around until today.

my only option is to set to 30" seconds, but its fixed i can't go shorter or longer using my timer.

i got a knockoff ML-L3 from Ebay, and it didn't work properly either. i then bought the "real" ML-L3 and couldn't be happier.

go quality and you probably won't have that issue.

I own the ML-3 "wireless' and the MC-DC1 "wired" but neither remote is capable of doing Time Lapse photography. which is why I bough the MC-36 clone from ebay. I guess I can just switch out to the ML-3 or MC-DC1 when I want to do lightening shots in bulb mode and use the MC-36 clone for set shutter speeds.

I found a thread on another forum from 2008 where a fellow was having the same problem as me. his thread died and never got an answer.

Dont buy cheap clones?

Seriously, an ML-L3 is like $20. Though the MC-36 is considerably more expensive, at least you're guaranteed it'll work.

it seems pretty inconvenient to have to use separate remotes for separate types of photography.

what do you mean by time lapse? lol. i know what time lapse photography is, but i just assumed the photographer set up the camera and sat beside it and pushed the remote whenever they felt they needed to. time-lapse is something i've never done or really bothered to research.

i guess i don't know what the MC-36 is supposed to do, i thought it was just the remote for the D80, because i didn't think the D80 accepted infrared.

i use my ML-L3 for all sorts of stuff, it's compatible with both bulb mode, and set shutter speed. in bulb i press once to open the shutter, and press again when i want to close the shutter. simple. when using it with a set shutter speed, you just press the remote, and it takes a photo.

well since the MC-36 is NOT compatible with the D80 you have to buy a "Cheap Clone" which is made from the same factory, but isn't marked up 300%. its the exact same body, same grip, same menu etc. just says "shoot" instead of "NIKON"

Baja California Timelapses on Vimeo

Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan on Vimeo

"Glory" - Canon EOS 7D Timelapse on Vimeo

I don't want to sit in front of the camera taking one photo every minute for 5 hours or what every my time frame is.
