Hello guys...
can somebody share your thoughts and experience about

AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G ?

What is good/bad about it, compared to the Sigma lense suggested by Saralonde (btw, ty for the thread...)? the price I can get it for is around $170.

(I tried the search function - didn't find results, sorry if I missed something)

Can't speak to the Sigma. I have the Nikkor to which you refer. It's soft wide open and when stopped down and at the far end (300mm) of its focal length. I haven't noticed significant vignetting at either end of the lens. It stinks in low light, though, so If you need a telephoto to use in low light, don't use this lens. If you can put it on a tripod, it might work in low light situations, but you'll need a sturdy head on the tripod because it isn't a lightweight lens.

I love the lens, to be sure. I've taken some great photos with it. I just understand its limitations. I sure didn't pay $170 (US) for it, though...

thanks alot saralonde for this post i agree with you they are probably the best for they're price
but i just wanted to put to light that vendors and the companies who make lense usually tend to exagerate the performance of their lense.you have to remember you can't only rely on the numbers and stats given by the company who really just want you to buy their products.you have to rely mainly on tests proven and proven right again to get a better idea of the performance of the lense.its just this, vendors will always exagerate how good their product is.

Default wanting IS but not wanting to lose quality

so I am in the process of saving up for the nifty fifty. I would also like to save up for a telephoto lens for taking sports pics and such. i like your suggestion, but i was wondering if the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Autofocus Lens might be a better fit for me. i really don't see a difference between this lens and the Sigma 70-300mmf/4-5.6 Macro APO DG other than IS.

what i'm hoping for is for someone to kindly explain to me the other differences between the two lenses other than the $50 or so dollar differential.

please and thank you!

The only gear i have atm is an old Canon Rebel XT with the 18-55 kit, i bought off a friend at a very generous price.

I have a 55-25 IS ,@ a year old. I own a XSi now. But I still have the wireless shutter release for the XT. I'm selling the package for 190. -if you in the US.
( I'm going Nikon eventually.) I have the 50 mm f/1.4 too. I'll get rid of all of this in time. write me if you're interested-James

Default 18-55 f/3-5.6?

I recently came across this lens and was wondering if anyone had experience with it? I'm wondering if it would be a decent replacement for my kit lens 18-55 f/5.6? Could this be a decent budget lens? Its coming in at 199 at my local camera store. Any comments or insights would be helpful!

thanks

I don't think so. I imagine that your 18-55mm probably opens up wider than f/5.6 at the 18mm end and suspect that what you are looking at would be a direct replacement. If you want to go fast, then a prime lens would be the way to go - a common option is to look for a second hand 50mm f/1.8 lens.
