Default New Nikon 70-300 mm Lens

I just bought myself a Nikon 70-300 mm lens for my birthday. Does anyone have any pointers for using it? Any resources I can check out? I like learning by doing, but some pointers would be great.

Step 1 - Take lens cap off
Step 2 - Turn on Camera
Step 3 - Point camera at thingy you want a photo of.
Step 4 - Push big button on top.
Step 5 - ????
Step 6 - Profit!

Remember your shutter speed when hand holding. Needs to be fast when zoomed.

Also, put it on your camera and experiment. We didn't discover fire by searching the Internet.
