Default Lighting done simple and cheap?

I am in need of setting up a small studio here at home. I have been asked to many portraits and am in need of lights... I like working with continuous lighting... I just don't want to spend 1000.00's right now in soft boxes just before the Holidays. LOL

Thanks for any suggestions !!!!!

I know what worked for me, personally.

I imititated RussHeath's Striplight Studio described in a series of wonderful threads here:

RussHeath - My Wife Taught Me to Shoot People -- Part 1

Then I started playing with an external hotshoe flash on camera and read up here: Planet Neil - Tangents

Once I felt like I was understanding what I was doing and not just blindly copying, I started in on the Strobist off camera lighting approach Strobist.

Now I have one decent flash, one decent studio flash, a small variety of constant lights with strip lights and clamps, and I just use whatever I feel like using for the effects I'm shooting for.
