Default Canon 50mm1.8 & 1.4 side by side

Specs and build quality aside, here's a quick shot of the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the Canon 50mm 1.4 side by side just to compare the physical sizes.
The photo doesn't really show the difference all too well but the 1.4 is substaintially larger than the 1.8

well, if you've already got both, can you compare the quality between the two lenses?
thanks

Now compare them to the f/1.2 and f/1.0 versions

I've also got both lenses and I have to say the main benefit that I've found with the 1.4 is its focus speed. Especially in low light. Just that factor alone has made the upgrade worth while for me. My frustration level while shooting events has gone way down.

Overall its sharper, faster, and focuses better. Its also more than twice as expensive... If you don't have the cash you won't be disappointed by the 1.8 its still a great lens at a great price.

Plus, it's just easier to use. There isn't much to grab onto when the 1.8 is mounted.

I found a comparison with 50mm 1.8 vs 1.4 vs 1.0L and the results are a bit surprising.

I actually love the 50mm f/1.8.
the only problem is the AF engine which does not use USM

More realistically, throw in the 50/1.8 Mark I.

I picked up the Canon 50mm 1.8 II lens yesterday after seeing the comparison that I previously posted and walking home past La Rambla took two photos of Street Performers.
No thought was done, wife kept walking and I literally spent 2 seconds preparing each photo.
The amount of detail when zoomed in is outstanding.
I could have afforded the Canon 50 1.4 lens but it would have taken away from my Canon 10-22 budget which I have been saving up for.

All in all great lens for the money, not worried about the build quality as the results to me are what is important.
