Default Lens question

I'm new to photography, I was given a Canon EOS Rebel XSi with these lenses Canon 18-55; Canon 55-250. I like to shoot sporting events, such as hockey, football and swimming. I'm looking for a lens that enables me to get the wide shots to for the upclose action like when I stand at the glass of the ice rink, and be able to zoom in for shots across the rink or football field. The 18-55 isn't good for this, and the 55-250 falls short. Hopefully there is something not too expensive out there, but I'll take any suggestions you all have.

Thanks

If you have good light (you won't), a 28-300 might work, but that's about as much zoom range as you'll get.

The point of a dSLR is that lenses are INTERCHANGEABLE. The 18-55 gives you the wide angle portion, and the 55-250 gives you the telephoto. Are you saying you want MORE reach? For HOckey that's gonna be really tight framing.

The 55 - 250 falls short because the object appears small? Try to crop out what you don't need in the frame and see how that works for you.
There was a 35 - 350 lens that Canon made (discontinued now) which would fit your range if you found a used one.
