Default What size filters do I put on my lens?

Here's what I have:

AF-S VR Nikkor 18-55mm. The kit lens that comes with the D3000.

I found several on Amazon and my reason for wanting some are just to protect my lens.

Look on the outside ring on the lens it will give you the size in mm of what size filter it takes.

Pretty sure that takes a standard 52mm filter, but it is always good to check the tech spec on individual lenses and that should have a listing for filter size.

Thanks guys. I just looked at the techs here

AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR from Nikon

And you guys were right. It is 52 mm. If I hadn't asked I would have purchased a 55 mm filter thinking that it's the same as lens size

Its the standard-for-nikon 52mm size. If you look on the bottom of the lens near the mount, you'll see a bunch of letters and acronyms. On the end is a circle with a line through it, then a number. This will always indicate the diameter of the filter threads.

I see. I saw it earlier and was wondering if that's what it was but I didn't know the name of the symbol. Thanks.

It's a capital Phi: Φ which, I assume stands for "filter", since phi is the Greek letter for the sound that English represents with the letter "f".

Erm ... I'm also seeing it claimed to be a Scandinavian letter, both claims being incorrect.

From Wikipedia for Phi: The diameter symbol in engineering, ⌀, is often incorrectly referred to as "phi". This symbol is used to indicate the diameter of a circular section, for example "⌀14", means the diameter of the circle is 14 units.

The article for the Scandinavian letter Ø says much the same.

Is it that, or could it be the GD&T symbol for diameter?
