Default Best way to pack or carry lenses?

I pack all my gear in a back pack style of case. I've always wondered if, when packing my lenses, etc., should I pack them glass up or glass down?
Any thoughts?

Pack them the way they fit. As long as they arent bouncing around, it doesnt matter. It's also a little silly to worry about: regardless of how you pack them they'll be sideways once you put the backpack on

When I pack mine, theyre in a shoulder bag and are vertical: they're lenses up but thats just because the rear of a lens looks just like the rear of another. At least with the front I can tell similar lenses apart.

theres glass on both sides..
it doesnt matter which way you put them in, so long as you have caps on each end and they dont bounce around ~ as Osmosis already said.

Pack them with their center of mass down, this will be useful shoul you zippers not be fully closed, it wil also help balance the pack towards you hips, though has less meaning for shoulder straps alone

OK. Since I tend to worry about breakage or problems with anything I own, I appreciate the replies. I've been packing them with the bottoms down, but not because I could identify them easier (which is way smarter and makes a lot more sense), but because it seemed to make sense to me. I have no idea why.
In my pack, most everything stores vertically and I do try to balance the load to save my back. Thanks again.
