Default Additional telephoto zoom lens

My friend is currently working with a D5000 with the kit lens and he is looking for an addition to this current set up, a telephoto zoom lens.He is leaning towards the brand new: Tamron SP AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD

And also, what are the differences between the lens above and the AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2
(Any Tamron experts out there ?) - I haven't got any Tamrons myself but I have had some good feedback from some of my other friends

He's looking for a middle price range. . .We live in Hong Kong, so I don't know what the exact price would be . . .but something similar to the Tamron SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD .

You guys got another recommendations or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

For a D5000? Spend the extra $100 for a Nikon 70-300 VR and be done with it.

I don't think anything can compete in price with the Tamron ($150 new???)..
What is the intended use?

OP specifies the NEW Tamron 70-300 VC, which is more like 450.

In terms of quality, in comparison to the Tamron.. is there major difference? What are the advantages for the extra $100?

Thanks!

Better build, better optics at the long end, better VR, better value should you decide to upgrade later.
