Rebel T1i KIT Lens

so I just got my hands on the T1i yesterday and I've been playing with it. sadly I couldn't afford any other lenses than the KIT lens. I have already ditched the auto mode and started shooting in Av mode. is there a way to achieve a good bokeh with the KIT lens? I mean, it can only go up to f/3.5 at the wide angle end and the closest focusing distance is 0.25m

so far, I got few "good" results with flowers and stuff. but when it comes to portraits, it doesn't do much good. what can I do until I buy a 50mm? help out a total noob? thanks in advance.
