Default lens wont turn...is it broken!???

I was playing around with some of the manual settings on my camera trying to experiment with different things.

I don't know if I changed a setting for something, or if it broke. I am worried sick that something may be wrong. I didn't drop it, bang it, bump it or anything. It still focuses and takes pictures perfectly but it is stuck on 55.

(It is a standard 18-55 Nikon d40X kit lens)

Take it in and have it checked. Since zoom is purely a mechanical function, it should work properly no matter what settings the camera is in. Don't try to force it.

Take it in, hope you can get it back in time for your wedding and then be happy it didn't break down there...

It could very well be cheaper to just buy a new one though, I don't know the price points for Nikon but some repairs outstrip the value of the equipment.

I have other equipment and lenses rented for the wedding, but I don't have the money to replace or repair it if it is broken. I don't know what could have happened because it was working fine one minute and just stopped turning. It still takes the photo fine, but it just wont zoom out or in.

So...after all this advice we gave you on reasons why not to shoot the weddings, you break your lens. Sorry, but I can't help but either cry with you or laugh.

I had the same problem with the same Nikon lens. I was taking photos and boom, the lens got “stuck.”

Research shows that there are two screws that tend to get loose, keeping the barrel from turning. Google it and see for yourself.

Do you have the 5 year warrantee on the lens? If so, you need to invoke it now.

Clearly this "kit" lens is not as good as many other Nikon lenses.

I'm sorry but how is that relevant or heplful at all? Sounds like someone needs to do more shooting and less posting. Sorry, but that's just pointless and rude.

Thank you to those to chimed in. I took it off the camera and fiddled with it a little. It was just stuck. Thanks to everyone who take their time to offer assistance.

No, I have to agree with Jim. This is just funny.

Are you going to be using the kit lens to shoot the wedding? If so, have it looked at before you do the wedding (if you are still doing it). You don't want it getting stuck as the bride walks down the aisle.
