Nikon D60 and Sigma 70-300mmD

It seems to me that this lens is not a good choice for the D60. I can get ok shots with it but the manual focus thing is not up my alley.

Are there any tips for this lens? I would like to know what the switch on the side is used for which is labeled: normal, macro (200-300).

How do I use the numbered scale?
