The D3000 does not have a command mode, so I was wondering if anybody knows if the Nikon SG-31R works with the built in flash of the D3000 so that you can fire a slave flash without the built in flash adding any light to the picture.

In short: the SG3-IR does nothing on the D3000. Nothing useful at any rate. Even when using the commander flash system on both a D80 and a D300s, I've only had a handful of times when I've needed the SG3-IR. If you want something that will act as a master, you have several options. An SB-800 or SB-900 on the camera can act as a master for other SB units off-camera. An SU-800 is the IR transmitter that will do the same. You can also go off-brand and get wireless triggers.
