Default glass advice needed...

I enjoy shooting Live bands .. I use a Rebel Xs and a 50mm f/1.8 .. I have the opportunity to purchase a Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM at a good price ..

i love the 50, but I have a hard time getting good "full body" shots on stage ..

How will the 28 compare to the 50??

thanks

KJ

I would think the easiest way for you to be able to see is to set up a "scene" that resembles a stage area then take your 18-55mm and set it to 28mm, take shots with it, then take shots from the same place using your 50mm. Hey presto, you have a visual reference so you know what you will get.
Hope that helps.

thats a great idea .. and the exposeure in low light I get with my 50 @ f/1.8 would be what I could expect from the 28??

It is ~1 stop smaller so if you were shooting in the same light, ISO, shutter speed, and wide open on both lenses there would be a on stop difference in exposure (either darker or lighter depend on what was the correct exposure).

Edit:
Forget the above I was seeing 28mmm as F2.8

You may want to see this post about exposure.

Learning about Exposure – The Exposure Triangle
You've got me confused there Richard, they're both f/1.8 so why do you say it is ~1 stop smaller?

PS. I'm not sure what "~" means (and it took me ages to find it on the keyboard), does it mean approximately?

umm ok .. now I'm thoroughly confused .. maybe I'm just missing something

I have a 50mm f/1.8 lens .. and when its at f/1.8 I can take photographs in fairly low light but I have to be lets say 15 feet away from someone to get a "full body" shot ..

with the 28 at f/1.8 couldn't I get basically the same shot at around 8 feet away??

My apologies.
I was reading 28mm as 2.8 (the word exposure did it!)

The ~ (tilde) symbol does mean approximately.

Kellyj69 - you are correct.

Wow, 2 hours 16 minutes between asking advise and purchase. That's pretty fast going.

As Richard says, Congrats and don't forget to post some results you get.

@Richard: thanks for clearing that up about the caret symbol.
