Default Nikon Cable Release

Hullo! I have myself a Nikon D90, and I'm recently delving deeper into Night Photography.

I'm looking to get myself one of those nifty cable releases, or remote triggers, to help reduce camera shake.

What has me confused is the vast range in price!

Nikon has a wireless (infared) little device that is no more than a button for less than 20 bucks. But then they also have cabled versions of shutter releases that are over 50 dollars.

So what is the difference?

Would anyone be able to give a beginner advice on what I should buy to trigger my D90's shutter without touching the camera? =) Should I get a remote trigger, or a cabled version?

If there are any aftermarket, third party, etc brands that are really nice I'd be willing to look into them as well!

The wireless remote is convenient, but does nothing except open and close the shutter.

The cabled versions usually have actual timer functions, which the wireless dosen't.

I like the convenience of the wireless, personally, but if you want timing abilities, you should look into the cabled one.

The cable releases with built in timers are vastly more expensive than those without.

At the moment, it's just not worth it to me. I'd plan on buying a normal cable release, and just use the timer built into my cellphone/wristwatch/stopwatch.

Or is there something here that I'm not understanding to explain that large jump in price?

Well, I personally wish that my D40 would take a cable release. I do lots of long exposures, and I value the ability to take photos longer than 30 seconds without having to babysit my camera -- a cable release could do that. With the wireless remote, I have to time everything myself and be right there to make it work.

But, that's what *I* need. If you don't need that, then save some bucks!

Also, the wireless remote is VERY useful for family portraits that you want to be in. I always impress the family at Christmas when I don't have to run back and forth between the camera and the sofa. :P

I first bought a wireless remote for my D80, used it a couple times, and bought a cable release. I have one for my D300 too.

I shoot a lot of sunrise shots, and night shots, but have never felt the need for a timer. I usually set the camera to bulb, and hold the button down as long as I think I need.

If the Nikon is like the Canon the wireless will ONLY work from the FRONT of the camera it won't work from the back.

Thumbs up

For night time photography cable release for the win. The one I purchased MC-Dc2 works excellent, it has a little lock on it, so you can leave the shutter open for whatever amount of time you want it to be without having your hand on it. So if you want a 20min exposure, just put the lock on and it keeps the shutter open, time yourself then come back and release the lock and walla. You got what you're looking for. Hope that helps...
