Default External Monitor Hooked to a Laptop?

For someone more technologically advanced than myself, can you hook an external monitor to your laptop? I would like to buy a monitor to use for photo editing as I am having a hard time with my laptop screen. Does anyone know how this can be done and can you recommend a good monitor for under $200?

Your laptop will have a serial output port. It will be oval-"ish" and have a female 9 pin connector. The new monitor will plug in there. You can run it with the lap top closed or configure it to run on both monitors. For computer hardware and such I like newegg.com
They have several 23+" monitors for under $200 including shipping.

yes you can. the Q is what type of output your laptop gives so you can get a monitor that supports that connection.

Check your Laptop, it most probably does have a VGA/RGB output (the one zona mentioned) & if its a new laptop it might have HDMI output too! which will way better than the RGB one.

PS: almost all Monitors do have both RGB / DVI / HDMI but its better to double check the connections.
