It really depends on what you plan to shoot. A 70-200 really locks you in to long shots, how would you take landscape shots with that lens on the camera? Really you need to put the lens on that makes sense for what you want to shoot. When I plan to shoot landscape I use my wide 10-20mm lens, for distance either my 70-300 or 200-500. When I have no clue what I am going to be shooting I take my trusty 18-200VR because of its wide range, even though it is far from being my sharpest lens.

I think I'd pick my Canon EF-S 17-55mm IS USM if I really have to pick one. Often I take my 85mm f/1.8 with me as the only lens, as it has a very nice focal distance, is light, fast, and of very high quality.

Canon EF 24-105 is my ultimate walk-around lens.
Toss it on an APS-C for even more zoom...etc. Amazingly sharp, pro quality glass... nice weighting, image stabilization... Best canon lens ever!

Canon 24-105 F4 L IS on a 5D
Nice & wide when needed and the IS helps in low light.

You're gonna laugh. My adapted Leica-R Summicron 35mm f/2. If I could get my hands on a reasonably priced 35/1.4 (ha!), that would probably be my chosen general-purpose lens.
Long enough to be normal, wide enough to do landscapes, close enough to do near macros, a good portrait lens, with a ton of available light capability and terrific image quality as well. A fast 35mm prime is, for me, a general purpose lens.

I would probably be tempted by my 35mm for the shallow depth of field I can get with it but if I could only bring one I know I would end up with my 16-85mm.
I just love this lens. Always start with it and change if I need to. p.s. Could I put the 35mm in my pocket ? It won't take much space I swear

Currently my 24-70 f/2.8, but I miss my 18-200.
