Default Tripod and Remote Control for Canon EOS 450D

Hello Folks!

This is my first post on DPS and I am very eager for your input, in fact I am really in NEED of it because I am so overwhelmed by the wealth of information out here on the internet that I dont know where to start but since DPS has been feeding my passion for photography I decided to come here.

I own a Canon EOS 450D DSLR and I need advice on what kind of tripod I would need to take portraits, landscapes and silhouettes etc and also if you think a remote control (and what kind) is essential for such type of photography.

Id like to invest in a good product but keeping in mind not to burn holes in my wallet!

Please help me....Thank you in advance.

Dee

Hi Dee, welcome to dPS.

How much heat does it take to burn a hole in your wallet?

I own a 450D too. When I went looking for a tripod at my camera store I settled on a Vanguard (204AP) over Manfrotto basically because of the price.
-It's light enough to carry around all day- 1.35 kg. (about 3 lbs.)
-It can manage about 2kg. (5lbs.) of camera and lens. (450D including battery = 525 gr., / 1.15 lbs.) Good enough for 450D though I don't think I'd use it for a heavier camera.
-It has a hook on the bottom of the column to hang your camera bag on for extra stability in wind etc.
-You can invert the column and hang the camera upside-down between the legs.
-It's got a quick shoe so you can mount and dismount the camera quickly.
-It has a built-in level to get your horizon straight.
-The legs can be locked at three different angles, the wider the more stable. Wider means less height.

That's about what I was looking for and what I got for 80 Euros. Google says about $110 new at amazon and b&h in the U.S.

Because of the light tripod and camera, fearing shake, I also bought the Canon RS60-E3 wired remote. The wire is about 60cm. (2 feet) long. Just plug it in and it's a second shutter release button, including a slide-in for "bulb" exposure in manual. The self-timer still works too. To trigger an infrared remote you have to be in front of the camera, or hold the remote in front, not ideal imho.

And if you're really neurotic about shake, don't forget the "mirror lock up", under custom options in the camera menu (number 9).

I hope this helps a bit.
