Default What umbrella to buy?

I am about to get my first lightening kit for portraits. I think I need to buy an umbrella and the probably the stand.
I would welcome any recommendations on what color umbrella I should get, is there any particular brand that it is good, and is there something else that I am missing?
what kind of bulb I should buy?
The price range for umbrella is huge - what is the difference?
Thank you!

What kind of light are you going to be using with the umbrella?

An umbrella is a light modifier, so you'll need to have some sort of light source in order to modify it. If you don't have anything, I'd look at getting a hotshoe flash that you can use on your camera. Once you've figured that out, you should have a pretty good idea what you're lighting needs are and can build from there.
