Wide angle?

Just wondering if it really does what they claim.

It's an adapter. It will lose you several stops of light, and (usually) a lot of image quality as well. But, it's also a really cheap way to get experience with wide angles.

If you really like wide angle lenses, there's no substitute for a real lens.

0.45x is gonna give you some pretty wicked distortion, coma and flare. That's a LOT of stretch.
