Hi everyone,
I just got myself a Nikon D5000 with the kit lens 17-55 and 55-200. I am looking at getting 2 new lenses for now. One being an all purpose lens and the other being a prime for portraiture. For the all rounder lens, i think i like this: Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR. Anyone have this lens and is it any good? Can get it in Australia for 750AUD. For my longer shots, i can use the kit 55-200, but i will eventually also buy a 70-300. As for the portraiture lens, i have seen the prime lenses, 55mm, 85mm and 135 mm. Any recommendations. Just looking for advice. Thanks |

A few things
Why did you get the 18-55 and 55-200 if you were going to upgrade right away to the 16-85 and 70-300? Sounds like wasted money. How long have you had a dSLR? How long have you been shooting? Why do you feel you need these other lenses? As for a prime, it's simple: there are a few lenses that wont autofocus on your D5000. Of those of interest 35mm f/1.8 DX: YES 35mm f/2 D: NO 50mm f/1.8 D: NO 50mm f/1.4 D: NO 50mm f/1.4 G: YES 85mm f/1.8 D: NO 85mm f/1.4 D: NO 105mm f/2 DC: NO 135mm f/2 DC: NO If autofocus is a big issue for you, then youve really only got 2 options. For portraiture, the 50mm f/1.4G would be best because it's a big longer, but for general use the 35mm f/1.8 DX is gonna be a better option
