Default Tamron 17-50 side focus problem

Long time lurker emerging here..

I've recently purchased the above lens(non VC) and keep noticing that almost every time i use anything, but a central AF point it keeps hunting, and still doesn't focus properly even in daylight conditions, mainly on right side, left is a bit better, but still not perfect(using it on D40).
Anyone else had this problem? Should i take it back to dealer?

P.S.

Are you focusing on areas with contrast? If not, that can be the problem.

I have the Tamron 17-50 too, but haven't experienced this problem. I use a Nikon D300, and to my recollection, I haven't noticed any focus problem on any focus points.

Have you tried to focus manually? Do you get sharp pictures then? If your copy of the lens has a focusing error, that the internal lenses are not able to focus properly, the AF in the camera is never/seldom able to find enough contrast to focus becaus of the lack of sharpness. But I'm only guessing.

Does this lens auto focus on the D40?...or is it strictly manual focus on that body?

Yes, it has a auto focus motor. At least, I haven't found any AF screw on it

@zetson

Haven't noticed any issues while using MF. Anyway, took it to the retailer yesterday, they checked it on mine, and other "out-of-the-box" body. Still the lens was behaving erratically on right side. They replaced it, and the new one seems fine for now.

@auto-focus

Yep, it does AF
