Hi everyone, hopefully i dont post in the wrong forum, but I have a question. i have a budget of about 1500.00. I was debating to buy either a 24-70mm 2.8L or the 24-105 4L. I was leaning towards the 24-70, b/c all my friends suggestions. I don't have any professional grade lenses yet, but i want to start building it. I use a rebel so its a 1.6 crop.
today though I found a used 28-70 2.8L for 800$ Now i am debating whether to buy this and another lens or go for the new 24-70? ![]() thanks for the help! |

I was looking at the same, and ended up getting the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I was extremely happy with it, except for the fact that it's too narrow for some shots on a crop body. If I had to do it all over again, I would get the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS right off the bat.
But as far as the 24-70L is concerned, I don't think it justifies its price premium over the Tamron, at least from my experience. |

Assuming it's a good copy, jump on it!

If the 28-70L is in good condition, and you like it, I'd say go for it--the price is good, as that more normally goes for around $900 on the used market. It's the 24-70's predecessor, and is pretty close in terms of quality--it's just that it's a normal-to-telephoto on a crop body, so you're kinda giving up the wide end altogether when you go with it. Just be sure you don't need a 20mm or sub-20mm wide angle in your walkaround zoom, and you should be ok.

If you can, get the 24-70mm because the improvements are outstanding and well worth it.
The 2 aspherical elements and one UD element makes color rendition and saturation almost magical. I also noticed there are gasket sealing rings on the mounting surface which acts like a Tupperware seal over the lens mount, and you will never see the metal mount when this lens is mounted. If you work in harsh environments like I do sometimes, this is a great welcome feature, and Canon doesn't even flaunt it! Cheers!
