Default Canon 24mm f/2.8....anyone have an opinion?

Looking for a good, starter WA....I've got a low budget unfortunately. Anyone have any experience with this lens? Good or bad?

On your T1i, the 24mm f/2.8 isn't exactly wide angle. It's a 36mm equivalent, which is getting into the normal territory.

hmm...ok...is there anything you could suggest? I really have no idea. Is it possible to just use the 18-55?

If you are wanting a WA look at the 10-20mm
Here's a SIgma for under $500 http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-10mm-Cam.../dp/B001S63A0C

A Canadian store.

Canada's best selection of Camera Lenses - Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, Leica, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic - Vistek Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Canada

They sell Tamron, Tokina, Canon, Sigma

Just pick a 10/12-20/24 that meets your needs

I am happy with my Tokina 12-24 however there are some better lenses in that range out there now.

Yes. The 18-55 is the cheapest wide angle lens Canon makes. Stop it down to f/8, use it on a tripod or with fast enough shutter speeds, and it'll get you some good stuff.

Lake Hodges

pretty in pink

And both of those were with the older, fuzzier, non-IS version of the 18-55.

18mm is wide angle on a crop body. The 10-22 everybody is pushing is an ultrawide.

I agree, the newer 18-55mm is a pretty decent lens, and great for the money.

The only thing it can't really do is be fast. While the 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 Canon's are faster, if you're looking for "wider than the 50mm f/1.8" (which many people are when they say "wide) and fast, the 28mm f/1.8 is an excellent bargain.

The 28/1.8 used to be an excellent bargain when it sold for around $350. Now it's around $450, and it's less easy to justify as a purchase, sadly. The Sigma 30/1.4 tends to garner the votes for that price range, these days.

I think it's still a great lens for the price. The Sigma really is the only offering that compares near the price point, but also remember the Sigma is APS-C only. They're both nice choices; easily an improvement over the 24/2.8 and 28/2.8. It's a small hop from those to either of the above, and then a big jump to the next level. I don't see anything wrong with either choice, assuming you're sticking with APS-C Canons.
