Has anyone dealt with any remote (wired or wireless) shutter activators made by third parties?
If so, are there any 'reputable brands' in this department. OEM pricing is just insane. A thousand dollars? Not-in-this-lifetime.

Sorry I am going with the prices at the local shops in Canada.
I'm guessing the one that I've been quoted on for 800 to 1000 dollars is the Canon LC-5 Wireless. There is also the Canon RC1, and the RS-80N3. I'm interested in an RF device, more or less.

If you are looking for an rf remote shutter, then the LC-5 isn't for you as it is infra-red based (Canon Professional Network - LC-5 Wireless Controller) It is also woefully over-priced - (AUD$700 here
) for an IR system. For RF based triggers there are cheap, Generic brand radio remote controller for Canon EOS cameras, and not so cheap, PocketWizard® - Remote flash and camera triggers for professional and advanced amateur photographers. I use pocket wizards for my lighting setups, so it was only a matter of buying the correct lead to convert to a wireless trigger. You're looking at two flexes and a cable (AUD$400x2 + $175 = $975), but you get extreme reliability, with the added bonus of off-camera ETTL flash. I use my PW setup on a semi-regular basis to shoot alternate angles for weddings (generally wide shots shot down the aisle from an elevated position or a reverse angle for when the minister limits my movements in church) and it has never failed me.

Yeah, the stupid N3 connector makes for some idiot pricing on some of the Canon remotes for the mid and higher tier cameras.
I've been very happy with my Yongnuo RF602s. It's a radio transmitter/receiver set that can be used both as a shutter release and as a remote flash trigger. You can find 'em on eBay. It's about $40 for a Tx/Rx set. Just make sure you get one with the correct shutter release cable, and you'll be good to go. The nice bonus over the Canon infrared solutions is that being radio based, you don't have to worry about range and line of sight issues.
