Default 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8

What would you suggest for baby portraits? They both have good reviews.

Is one sharper than the other? What about colors?

IM using a 50D crop

I would lean towards the 50mm...the 85 might require you be back too far from your little subjects. The 85 on your crop body works out to be 136mm. To further confuse matters you may even want to consider the 35mm F/1.8

I would recommend the 35mm or the 50mm. I already have to stand at the other side of the room to get a full shot with the 50. I think you would have to have a large room or be outdoors with the 85mm.

Agreed with the previous posters. The 85mm is wonderful for outdoor portraits or indoors when you have plenty of room to back up, but if you're photographing babies indoors in tight spaces, it's pretty tough. I use my 50mm also on a crop body and barely have had enough room.

We (Cathy and I) have had that same problem with our 50...makes a good argument for the 35mm.

thansk to all for the advice. I was also looking into the 35 2.0. My only concern is I may be to close to the baby? I know that lens w/o USM can be loud sometimes.

Primes are usually better IQ, and usually faster than standard zooms.

On another board I'm on I asked about this lens and it came highly recommended - some of the people posted examples and the photos were beautiful! And yes, it was mostly babies and kids they were photographing. If you're going to be photographing newborns don't worry about the noise - the newbies I've done slept like rocks (once they finally fell asleep).
