Default Which UV filter? Hoya/ Cokin or Kenko?

need a uv protection filter but not sure which one of the above brands to purchase.
most stores sell Kenko - so I tried Kenko but got flare.
sales person now suggests Kenko pro - will this be any better?
should I rather use one of the other brands?

How about none...seriously..For haze reduction...maybe...for lens protection do a search on here for the threads debating using one or not...
And besides isnt that part of the function of a lens hood...
I used to have them on mine but took them off for the same reason you did..lens flare

Hoya HMC or S-HMCs for me. They tested out better than the other brands. Cokin is if you don't want a screw-in filter, but want to use a filter holder in front of the lens. Just my opinion, ymmv. Pretty much you're just looking for something multicoated.

And I use UV filters for protection all the time. I shoot in back canyons where there's a lot of dust, and at the beach where salt spray and sand are issues. I prefer being able to fearlessly swipe crap off a replaceable filter, rather than worrying about whether I'm "polishing off" the coatings on my lens's front element. Again, ymmv.

I shot with an Olympus OM-10 for 20+ years. It had a single 50mm f/1.8 lens that never had a lens cap or hood on it. It had a single (and somewhat battered) skylight filter protecting it in all that time. The front element is still pristine. And I hauled that puppy with me EVERYWHERE: to the beach and even Antarctica. Filters can be a good protection investment.

Hoya, B&W, etc. are all very good. You can't go wrong with one of their multicoated UV filters.

digirebelva -- UV filters do no noticeable haze reduction on digital cameras. Digital sensors already have a UV filter across the sensor. However, UV filters ARE very useful (as inkista mentioned) for physical protection, especially against sand, dust, etc. which a lens hood won't even touch.

I can vouch for the S-HMC's. Great filters at great prices!

I am very happy with B+W. Have them on most of my lenses.

B+W are my favorite for polarizing and ND, but haze / uv, why bother.
