I'm looking to buy a 10-20mm wide angle lens for my Canon 1000D. Is there any real difference between Sigma and Tamron lenses? I have discounted Canon because of cost. Does anyone know where is the best place to go for new or used, or are second hand lenses false economy? It must have image stabilisation (IS). Would be very interested in your views.

Not really. Most of the ultrawides seem to be pretty much equivalent, although the 10-22 apparently has better consistency across copies than some of the third-parties. Why do you need stabilization? The short focal lengths pretty much mean you're just relying on your handholding capabilities, and ultrawides are more typically used for landscapes outside. With sunshine.
If you plan on using the lens indoors, then the Tokina 11-16 may be the one you want to look at, as it's f/2.8. Hard to find in Canon mount right now for its MSRP, though...

The only "ultrawide" that has some kinda of stabilization is the Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR. That's it. As inkista mentioned, there's no need for IS on a lens that wide.
