Flash for Canon PS SX10 is

I am looking for a flash for my Canon Powershot SX10 is. I know the Canon Speedlite work, but I can't afford those at the moment. I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with a different brand flash and this camera? I have read there are some Vivitar and Opteka flashes that will work, but I may have to set manually? I am brand new to photography, and really have no idea what that means!
Any help, suggestions or tips would be really appreciated! I have learned so much from these forums already! I love it!
