Default Wide Angle Lens for Canon 50D

Hi All,
I am a new member and relatively new to photography also, I currently have a Canon 50 D with 28-135 mm EF USM and 75-300 EF USM lenses.
I use 28-135 mm lens for most of my photography that is my kids , family gatherings etc. I just came back from a trip to Taj Mehal in India and i missed having a wide angle lens.
I would love to invest in a wide angle lens but i am not sure which one to buy , my price range is up to 600 -700 bucks. My main concern is that i want to buy a wide enough wide angle lens( to get those amazing shots ) which i can use for my daily photography to take pictures of my kids so i dont have to go through changing lenses on my camera. I travel less and spend more time at or around my home with my kids so more pics of family than landscape or architecture.
any suggestions will be highly appreciated.
thanks much,
Sak

If you want REALLY wide, I guess the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or it's Sigma counterpart Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM are great wide angle options.

Can I use it as all around lens?

Nope. Probably not as an all round lens. I think this is the widest all round lens made for APS-C sensors such as your 50D.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Sigma has this one.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

Unfortunately I don't have a clue about Tamron.

Ultrawides aren't general purpose lenses. It sounds like you want a walkaround that goes to 17 or 18mm on the wide end.

The EF-S 15-85 IS USM is good, but pretty expensive for what you get ($725). The crop body "replacement" for the EF 28-135 you have is the new EF-S 18-135 IS (no USM). That's less expensive than the 15-85 ($375), and could be a direct replacement for your current walkaround. There's also the old EF-S 17-85 IS USM (the lens the 15-85 replaced) [$419].

All of these, however, are slow lenses, like your 28-135. If you want a faster lens, then something like a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 might be more what you're looking for ($450).

I agree with inkista. I have a 17-55 Tamron 2.8 and it's a great all around lens, but still wide enough for most architecture and landscapes. It's AF is also fast and crisp. I gave some thought this past year to an ultrawide, but decided the 17 would be enough for me in the end.
